Assignment 1

For the second session, please read the following two National Institute of Standards and Technology documents on firewalls and intrusion detection systems. They're both available in PDF format, which means you'll need a copy of Acrobat Reader (freely available at www.adobe.com, if you don't already have it) to read them.

Guidelines on Firewalls and Firewall Policy. NIST Special Publication SP 800-41. January 2002. 74 pages / 1.2 Mb. The sections I think you should read most carefully are sections 1-3, pp. 1-32.
Intrusion Detection Systems. NIST Special Publication SP 800-31. August 2001. 51 pages / 870 Kb.
