Vermiculite is a mineral that has been used as insulation in buildings and building materials. Vermiculite itself does not pose a health risk. The hazard is from vermiculite that contains asbestos. From 1920-1970 vermiculite was mined in Libby, Montana. About 70% of vermiculite used was produced from this mine. The vermiculite in that mine is contaminated with asbestos. Asbestos that is sealed and undisturbed is not hazardous. The danger results from airborne asbestos fibers that are breathed into the lungs. Most people with vermiculite products in their homes or work buildings are not being exposed to hazardous amounts of asbestos fibers. The amount of asbestos in the vermiculite is small, the vermiculite is sealed, or the vermiculite does not contain asbestos. Asbestos or asbestos containing products are only hazardous if they are disturbed and fibers are released into the air.
