"Alternative treatment" is the term used for treatment instead of conventional treatment and is not recommended by medical experts. "Complementary treatment" is treatment used in addition to conventional treatment. Most experts do recommend complementary treatment methods.
Complementary methods are used during the time patients are undergoing aggressive chemotherapy or radiation therapy. They are selected to improve a patient's quality of life, overall health and well-being. These complementary methods usually include improving the diet, developing exercise routines, selecting vitamin and herbal supplements, and managing stress by meditation, hypnosis, imagery, prayer and spirituality, acupuncture and/or acupressure, and massage.
Some insurance providers cover these treatments.
