Peritoneal mesothelioma is mesothelioma in the peritoneum. The peritoneum are smooth membranes that line the cavity of the abdomen and also surround the individual organs of the abdomen. Additionally they produce a lubricating fluid that fills the spaces of the abdominal cavity. This fluid helps the organs to move smoothly inside the abdomen as the body moves around. Without these smooth protective tissues and the lubricating fluid they produce, movement of the tissues of the abdomen would cause friction. The organs and other tissues of the abdominal cavity would become irritated and painful. Peritoneal mesothelioma is the growth of malignant tumors on the tissues that line the abdominal cavity and surround the organs of the abdomen. As they increase in size they limit the space available for them to function and restrict the movement of these organs.
