Mesothelioma has been a rare and aggressive cancer that has had no cure and doctors have offered no hope of a cure being developed within the foreseeable future. Research designed to find new treatment and a cure for mesothelioma has been underfunded. More research is needed to develop effective treatment of the symptoms of the disease and to find a cure. Money given to research programs specifically designed to study mesothelioma falls far short of the need. The rate of diagnosis of mesothelioma in patients has greatly increased during the past decade as persons exposed to asbestos pass out of the latency period of the disease. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has a budget well over $3 billion and only allotted $1.6 million specifically for mesothelioma research.
Because of the small amount of research being done, many doctors recommend that quality of life become the main focus after mesothelioma is diagnosed. The research however is showing hope for a longer life expectancy after diagnosis and also for a cure. The key to developing improved treatments for mesothelioma is greater funding for research.
