Several factors other than asbestos have been associated with mesothelioma. A few published reports have reported pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma that developed following exposure to thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) that was used in the past for certain x-ray tests.
Zeolite is a silicate mineral, is chemically related to asbestos and is common in the soil of the Anatoly region of Turkey where cases of non-asbestos related mesothelioma have been diagnosed. The Simian virus 40 (SV40 virus) has recently been identified by researchers in human mesothelioma cells, and has been shown to induce mesothelioma in the animals.
Tobacco smoking has not been associated with the development of mesothelioma. However, in combination with asbestos exposure tobacco smoking greatly increases the risk of lung cancer.
