When asbestos is suspected or confirmed in a product, it needs to be determined if it presents a hazard. If it seems to be in good repair, experts advise that the product be left alone. It does not currently pose a health risk and only needs to be monitored. If the product seems to be damaged and not intact a professional should either repair or remove it. Professionals should be called upon because they have experience and training in safety that will keep the risk of increasing the danger from asbestos fibers. The easiest way to raise the level of asbestos fibers in the air is to disturb a problem area of a suspected asbestos product. Repair is the preferred way to handle asbestos fibers, because it involves just covering or sealing it. This caused the least disturbance of the product and results in much less of a risk. Sealing asbestos requires training in to handle asbestos safely. Repairing an asbestos problem also is usually cheaper then having it removed. Products that might contain asbestos should be monitored for indications that they are beginning to wear or have become damaged. Water stains, tearing, or abraded surfaces are all be indications of a problem. Exposure to the area should be avoided and the proper officials contacted to learn how the problem should be resolved.
