Because of the growing awareness of the presence of asbestos in school buildings and the concern for the danger exposure to asbestos poses, Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) in 1986. This act serves to protect students and school employees from exposure to asbestos in school buildings. The list of requirements outlined in the act is comprehensive. Each school building is required to have readily available for public review at all times a copy of an Asbestos Management Plan that reports asbestos inspections, locations, and the actions and plans to address the hazard of asbestos exposure within the school building.
