Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lining of the lung (called the pleura) and the abdomen (called peritoneum). Occasionally, rare cases of mesothelioma can occur in other areas of the body as well. Like most cancers, mesothelioma treatment is most effective when it is diagnosed early. Different types of treatment are used for different stages the cancer is in. There are several types of treatment for patients with mesothelioma. Some types of treatment are well known, such as surgery and chemotherapy, while newer types of treatment are not as widely known. New mesothelioma treatment types are always being researched and developed.
